Paul Everitt chief executive of SMMT commented, “Today’s figures are further evidence of the progress car makers have made in cutting CO2 from new models. The reductions are significant and sustained and will increase as more fuel-efficient cars come to market. We will continue to work with fuel companies, government and other stakeholders to ensure that our progress is supported by the right incentives, a strong re-fuelling infrastructure and better consumer information.”
“The first six months of the year have seen the biggest drop in new car CO2 on record,” said Jay Nagley of Clean Green Cars. “The great irony is that rising fuel costs, not environmental concerns, have done more to accelerate the shift to fuel efficient cars than any other initiative. Whether we like it or not, for most people, saving money still trumps saving the planet when it comes to buying a new car.”
