From competitiveness and international trade to smart and sustainable mobility, SMMT ensures the automotive industry’s interests are fully represented to UK government and international partners, and considered in critical policy and regulatory discussions shaping our future in a rapidly changing world.
SMMT is at the forefront of the industry and recognised for authoritative, evidence-based political, technical and economic analysis and advocacy. We seek to influence policy and funding at local, national and international levels, and help to shape regulation, standards and support schemes on our members’ behalf.
SMMT represents the industry in key government fora, including the Automotive Council, government-led advisory groups and task forces, and works with partners across the UK’s innovation ecosystem such as the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC).
SMMT also works in close association with its European and global sister organisations to maximise the reach of UK industry issues and influence, improve trade and market access and attract inward investment to the benefit of our members.
We are committed to delivering on the shared ambitions of our members, creating an opportunity for all automotive businesses, regardless of size, to be heard. Members are encouraged to help shape the industry voice by contributing to thematic committees, policy positions and consultations, and meetings with officials, MPs and ministers.

SMMT’s comprehensive membership base covers every aspect of the automotive industry, from vehicles to components, trailers to aftermarket; and from large global corporations to small and medium enterprises. The scope of interest of our members also varies dramatically, ranging from direct, partial or indirect involvement in the manufacturing of vehicles and components, to design engineering and distribution, and a variety of other services aligned to the industry.
